Parent Newsletter / Important October Update for All Families

Deep Cove Parents,

Administration shared the following information at our recent PAC meeting. We have also added a second item, below, about our Student/Family Affordability Fund.

In Class Instruction:

  1. Classes are well into their term one areas of learning. Teachers have been busy assessing students, and making individual plans to reach all of the children. It is great to see so much learning visible in and around our school (art projects, literature circles outside, etc.)
  2. Sports have started at lunch with intermediate soccer. Thanks to Mr. Makuch, Madame MacIntyre, Mrs. Werk and others for their leadership with student soccer.
  3. We have student announcers, giving student news updates to the whole school each and every day!
  4. Before school reading success club has started for some of our learners, through our Learning Services Team
  5. Beacon Community “Wellness and Me” social support program has also started for some students

Student Affordability Fund:

To support students and their families who are feeling challenged with the rising costs of living, the B.C. Ministry of Education and Child Care has provided our school with one-time targeted, special grant funding through the Student and Family Affordability Fund

Funding support available

Funding support is meant to offset increased cost of living expenses. As a school we allocate this money toward school-related expenses incurred by families during the 2022-2023 school year.

Eligible expenses include:

  • School fees
  • Student supplies
  • Clothing/footwear
  • Basic necessities
  • Athletic wear (for gyn/school athletics)
  • Family food security (groceries)
  • PAC hot lunch fees
  • field trip fees

Request support

To request support at any time,  please contact Deep Cove’s principal in complete confidence: pjungen@saanicschools.ca

You may also reach out to your child’s teacher,  or front office staff.

Building and Grounds:

Thanks go out to our district grounds and carpentry crews, who have been working with us to install new boot brushes, repair concrete, inspect our roof and heating system, and add topsoil outside. Look for two new metal outside storage bins for students soon! These will be used for recess balls and equipment.

Grants:

We have put in for a national technology grant from a major electronics store, as well as a Tree Canada Grant, to add shade trees to our property. Results come in the new year.

General:

  • School Communication: As parents no longer receive an auto-alert when our website is updated, we will direct all parents to our website, with a brief email through the MyEd email system.
  • We will be commencing Hot Lunch in November. Thanks to the PAC for all their work on this.

Reminders:

1 Rainy weather: a reminder to ensure children are prepared for when our rains finally arrive!

2 Lost and Found - check our website!

  1. October 31 - Halloween. See email from school sent to all parents
